In the face of this economic strain, an increasing number of Nigerians are turning to an unlikely savior: roadside food vendors, whose budget-friendly offerings provide a lifeline for those struggling to cope with rising costs.

The bustling streets of cities and towns alike now witness a surge in activity around makeshift food stalls, where vendors set up their humble operations. These vendors, often equipped with nothing more than a cart, wheelbarrow, or a small table along the roadside, offer a diverse array of meals at prices that resonate with the wallets of their cash-strapped customers.

For many, the decision to patronize these roadside vendors is born out of necessity. Sekinat Shodimu, a fashion designer, lamented the steep hike in food prices, particularly staple items like rice and noodles. “The economy is not smiling at all,” she remarked, reflecting on the grim reality faced by countless Nigerians. “I now patronize roadside food vendors,” she continued, “where I can get a meal for as low as N300 to N500, compared to the exorbitant prices charged by restaurants.”

Jude Balogun, a trader, echoed similar sentiments, noting the drastic shift in his dining habits. “Before, I buy my food from eateries,” he recalled. “But now, I had to embrace roadside food vendors to survive and be able to save. With them, I spend just N2,000 daily for food instead of N6,000.”

Even Mrs. Romoke Fashina, who owns a local restaurant (Buka), acknowledged the challenges posed by the relentless rise in food prices. “The cost of preparing meals in a local restaurant is on the high side,” she admitted. “Many now prefer buying food from these roadside vendors to cut costs.”

However, behind the facade of affordability lies a harsh reality for the roadside vendors themselves. Kelechi Adams, one such vendor, shed light on the struggles faced by those operating these modest food stalls. “It has not been easy selling cooked food because of the daily increments in food items,” she confessed. “The reason why food from roadside food vendors is cheap is because we don’t pay for shops. Some of us even hawk using wheelbarrows or placing the food on our heads.”

In the midst of economic uncertainty and hardship, the resilience of Nigerians shines through as they adapt to survive in the face of adversity. The reliance on roadside vendors for budget-friendly meals serves as a testament to the resourcefulness and determination of ordinary citizens in navigating the challenges posed by rising food prices. Yet, as both patrons and vendors alike grapple with the harsh realities of inflation, the struggle for affordable sustenance remains an enduring battle in the daily lives of Nigerians across the nation.
