EFCC Storms Abuja “Yahoo Academy,” Nabs 31 Suspects In Major Crackdown

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested 31 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud during a coordinated operation carried out on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at a facility described as a cybercrime training centre located in Becki Estate, Karu, within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to Ireporter Online, the suspects, said to include two alleged masterminds and several trainees, were apprehended while reportedly undergoing structured tutorials in online fraud. Authorities disclosed that items recovered during the raid included multiple mobile phones, 18 laptop computers, and other electronic devices believed to be used in illicit activities.

Further findings from preliminary investigations revealed that some of the trainees had been recruited from Benue State under the pretense of legitimate job opportunities. Upon arrival at the facility, however, they were allegedly equipped with communication gadgets, computer systems, and specialized software, which were then used to initiate them into cybercrime operations.

Investigators also uncovered that the recruits were confined within the premises of the academy, with their movement strictly restricted. Their mobile phones were reportedly seized, effectively isolating them from external contact. In addition, the environment was said to be enforced with strict discipline, including reports of physical punishment for those who failed to comply with directives.

The anti-graft agency indicated that all suspects will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
