EFCC to Prosecute Banks and Top Bankers for Major Financial Frauds, Says Chairman Olukoyede
Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that major financial frauds in Nigeria are being perpetrated by banks and their top officials. Speaking at the 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference organized by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Mr. Olukoyede emphasized that the banking sector is deeply involved in mind-boggling fraudulent activities, significantly affecting the nation’s economy.
Addressing participants at the event held at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, on Tuesday, the EFCC boss expressed concern about how bank officials secretly devise schemes to bypass regulations, contributing to large-scale corruption.
“Some of the major financial frauds that have crippled our economy have passed through the banking industry. We have compiled evidence and conducted thorough investigations,” Mr. Olukoyede stated, signaling a turning point in the anti-corruption fight under his leadership.
He further stressed that the EFCC will no longer stand by while these fraudulent activities continue, vowing that banks and their top executives involved in financial crimes will face prosecution. “When there are criminal infractions, penal sanctions will follow. Very soon, you will see some banks and top officials prosecuted,” he added.
Mr. Olukoyede’s comments shed light on the systemic issues within Nigeria’s banking sector, signaling a more aggressive approach from the EFCC in tackling corruption. This commitment comes at a time when the commission is working to restore trust in the financial system and strengthen Nigeria’s economy.
The conference was attended by top officials, with President Bola Tinubu represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
