Election Uproar: Kwankwaso Accuses Northern Leaders Of Deceit

Kwankwaso claims these leaders are meddling in candidate selection, particularly for the presidential race, and argued that it’s misguided for them to assert they represent the region.

The NNPP’s presidential candidate from the 2023 elections expressed that such actions are sowing division and undermining democracy by supporting unqualified candidates.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso stated that past election events should have prompted these leaders to desist from candidate selection interference and instead allow the public to choose their preferred presidential candidate.

“This oppressive behavior is creating discord within our communities. It’s crucial to operate based on truth,” he stated.

He emphasized that many of these elders, who he referred to as either parents or brothers in the North, should avoid favoritism in candidate selection.

“Many come to mislead the populace, claiming that the North has settled on its candidates. Though there are only two or three individuals behind this, they are peddling falsehoods instead of advocating for their own descendants in venues like Port Harcourt or Abuja,” he added.

Kwankwaso also refuted rumors of a supposed agreement among him, former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, and Peter Obi of the LP, which suggested a rotational presidency among them.

He expressed disappointment at hearing that the Atiku faction was convening with local leaders, including religious leaders, in anticipation of the 2027 elections.

“This situation truly troubles me. These elders are spreading lies about agreements that do not exist,” he remarked.

“I’ve been informed that approximately forty-five religious leaders were assembled, spreading misinformation. But none of this is true. I’m extremely displeased about this situation.”

He rejected claims that he had consented to a rotational presidency arrangement where Atiku would serve four years, he would serve four years, and Peter Obi would serve eight years. “This pact does not exist; it has not been established,” Kwankwaso insisted.
