Emefiele: DSS Breaks Silence After Officers Clash With Prison Officials

The Department of State Services (DSS) has initiated an investigation into the clash that occurred within the premises of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos on Tuesday.

The clash involved DSS operatives and prison officials during the arraignment of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Peter Afunanya, the spokesman of the secret police, termed the clash as “unfortunate” and confirmed that the incident is currently under investigation.

He clarified that the DSS did not support or encourage the incident and emphasized the agency’s profound respect for the Judiciary as an arm and institution of government. The DSS views the Judiciary as crucial in nation-building, national development, and security management, and maintains strong relationships with other security and law enforcement agencies.

Afunanya acknowledged that both agencies’ personnel displayed undue overzealousness during the clash, and as a result, the DSS has launched a detailed investigation to identify specific individuals’ roles and take appropriate disciplinary actions if necessary.

The DSS firmly stated that it has not violated any laws in handling Emefiele’s case and dismissed attempts by certain parties to undermine the agency’s leadership.

The DSS reiterated its commitment to professionalism, ethical standards, and discipline while fulfilling its national security mandate. It urged well-meaning Nigerians to support its efforts in achieving the country’s desired security goals and emphasized the importance of unity, love, and tolerance in building a stronger Nigeria.
