Speaking at a national dialogue event organized to honor constitutional lawyer Prof. Ben Nwabueze, Anyaoku stressed the urgent need for substantial constitutional reforms to steer Nigeria towards genuine federalism and effective governance.

During the dialogue, themed “Lawful Procedures for Actualizing a People’s Constitution for Nigeria,” Anyaoku highlighted the lack of legitimacy of the existing constitution in tackling Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges.

Proposing two potential pathways for reform, Anyaoku suggested either adopting the recommendations of the 2014 national conference or convening a new constituent assembly to craft a truly federal constitution that reflects the country’s diverse interests.

Anyaoku criticized the current constitution’s failure to decentralize power among Nigeria’s federating units effectively, arguing that such decentralization is essential for the nation’s development.

Pointing to Nigeria’s pluralistic nature, Anyaoku emphasized the need for a governance model that empowers regional authorities, enabling them to address local needs and drive national progress.

He stated, “Nigeria is a pluralistic country striving for political stability and socioeconomic development. Successful pluralistic countries have generally practiced true federalism, devolving considerable power to the federating units.”

Anyaoku highlighted several areas where Nigeria has witnessed deterioration, including security, economic well-being, infrastructure, social cohesion, and national unity, attributing these challenges to the shortcomings of the current constitution.

In light of these concerns, Anyaoku proposed two options for achieving a genuine federal constitution: either adopting the recommendations of the 2014 National Confab or convening a directly elected constituent assembly on a non-party basis.

As Nigeria grapples with pressing issues across various fronts, Anyaoku’s call for constitutional reform underscores the need for proactive measures to address the nation’s complex challenges and pave the way for inclusive governance and sustainable development.
