Edo’s Only PDP Federal Lawmaker, Marcus Onobun, Resigns Amid Party Turmoil

In a significant political development, Hon. Marcus Onobun, the sole Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member representing Edo State in the House of Representatives, has officially resigned from the party. Onobun, who represents the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency, cited unending internal crises and persistent leadership instability as the primary reasons for his departure.

According to iReporter Online, the lawmaker’s resignation was conveyed in a formal letter addressed to the PDP Ward 6 Chairman in Esan West Local Government Area on Friday. In the letter, Onobun explained that his decision followed “extensive consultations” with political leaders, associates, and constituents who unanimously agreed that the PDP had veered off course.

“It has become evident that the internal crises, leadership instability, and deep-seated divisions that continue to plague the party at all levels are no longer reconcilable,” Onobun wrote. He added that the party’s unresolved issues have seriously undermined its capacity to deliver on its original vision and serve the Nigerian people effectively.

Onobun, a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, expressed his disappointment over the PDP’s inability to evolve or implement meaningful reforms, even after several years of internal debate and conflict resolution efforts. According to iReporter Online, the lawmaker emphasized that his resignation was a principled decision aimed at securing a better political platform to serve his people and advance development goals.

“As a loyal party member, I have contributed my quota in service to the PDP over the years,” he stated. “However, in the interest of my people and the mandate I hold, I have to take a principled stand that allows me to pursue a more effective pathway toward development, unity, and good governance.”

Onobun’s exit adds to the wave of high-profile defections that have rocked the PDP in recent months.
