Evidence Shows Nigeria Is On The Right Track

According to Ireporter Online, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during a press briefing marking activities for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Akume acknowledged the hardships Nigerians are currently facing as a result of the government’s economic reforms, noting that while challenges remain, the administration is committed to ensuring long-term stability and growth.

He stated that recent economic data points to gradual recovery across key sectors, stressing that the reforms being implemented will eventually yield positive outcomes for the country. He added that inflation, though still high, is on a downward trend, while insecurity continues to pose concerns for citizens.

The SGF referenced key economic figures, including a 4.07 per cent GDP growth recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 3.89 per cent in the first quarter of 2026, describing them as indicators that the economy is moving in a positive direction.

Akume also highlighted the government’s social intervention programmes aimed at cushioning the impact of reforms on citizens. He revealed that over one million students have benefitted from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, with more than ₦184 billion disbursed for tuition and upkeep. He further noted that millions of households have received support through conditional cash transfer initiatives, while expanded credit schemes are improving access to financing.

On fiscal reforms, he defended recent tax policies signed into law in 2025, explaining that they are designed to strengthen revenue generation and improve accountability in public finance.

Speaking on anti-corruption efforts, Akume said anti-graft agencies have continued to recover stolen assets and prosecute offenders, adding that recovered funds have partly supported social programmes such as student loans. He also linked Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force grey list in October 2025 to improvements in financial monitoring and anti-money laundering frameworks.

While admitting that insecurity remains a major challenge, the SGF assured that government is intensifying efforts to strengthen the capacity of security agencies through increased recruitment, funding, and operational support.

He further called for national unity, emphasizing that development can only be sustained when trust and cooperation outweigh divisions among citizens. Akume also referenced ongoing initiatives such as interfaith dialogue platforms and the recently approved National Values Charter aimed at promoting citizenship, tolerance, and cohesion.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Akume stated that the administration remains confident in its performance, adding that Nigerians will ultimately decide based on evidence and results.
