Ex-Nigerian Ambassador Sues Onyeama For Libel In US Court

Former Nigerian Ambassador to Namibia, Ms Lilian Onoh, has taken legal action against Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, and Mr Gabriel Aduda, a former Permanent Secretary at the ministry, filing a libel suit at the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

In the court documents, Onoh accused Onyeama and Aduda of utilizing a New York-based online newspaper to defame her. The online newspaper reportedly published an article in April claiming that Ms Onoh was dismissed by the Nigerian government for the misappropriation of N50 million.

In response, Onoh’s counsel argued that the claims were false, emphasizing that she was never terminated for misappropriation of funds. The court case seeks costs of litigation and other equitable relief.

The allegations stem from a series of memos Ms Onoh had sent to then-Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, accusing Onyeama of condoning corrupt practices at the foreign ministry during his tenure.

The libel suit contests the specific claims made in the online newspaper article, challenging the narrative of Ms Onoh’s termination and the existence of an investigative committee led by Aduda.

The court case has been assigned to Judge Jane Boyle for adjudication at the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas. However, as of now, no date has been fixed for the hearing. The suit is a legal response to the perceived defamation through false accusations published in the online newspaper.
