Plateau Attacks: Inspector General Of Police Arrives Jos

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has arrived at Yakubu Gowon Airport in Jos for an assessment of the situation following the Christmas Eve attacks in Plateau State.

The attacks occurred in Bokkos, Barkin-Ladi, and parts of Mangu, resulting in over 190 deaths, numerous injuries, and widespread destruction of property and homes.

Upon arrival, the IGP was received at the airport by the Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, Julius Alawari, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, and other security chiefs in the state.

The police boss is scheduled to attend a stakeholders meeting with Governor Caleb Mutfwang to discuss the security situation in the affected areas. Subsequently, he will proceed to Bokkos to inspect the security measures implemented.

The visit comes in the wake of another attack on a community in the same Local Government on Thursday night, following the Christmas Eve attack. The Transition Committee Chairman of Bokkos, Monday Kassah, reported that marauders attacked the community at night, resulting in the burning and destruction of homes. Fortunately, no deaths were recorded due to the timely intervention of security personnel.

Providing an update on the Christmas Day attack, the committee chairman stated that the number of casualties remains at 195, confirming ongoing rescue operations to find missing persons. The casualties include 148 in Bokkos Local Government Area, 19 in Mangu Local Government Area, and 27 in Barkin Ladi. Additionally, 1,290 houses were burnt down in Bokkos council, one house was razed in Mangu LGA, and the extent of damage in Barkin Ladi is yet to be ascertained at press time.

The Yuletide incident is considered the worst outbreak of violence in Plateau since May, resulting in over 190 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
