Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has emphasized the critical role of comfortable places of worship in curbing crime, stating that providing such venues is the sole effective approach to reducing societal crime rates.

During a Sallah solidarity visit from the Vice President General and Chairman of the Association of South-South Muslim Ummah of Nigeria, Nasir Awhelebe Uhor, Governor Fubara made this assertion at Government House, Port Harcourt. He expressed this viewpoint while addressing concerns from the Muslim community regarding the inadequate burial section allocated to them in the Port Harcourt cemetery and their request to establish a mosque at Rivers State University.

Governor Fubara assured the delegation of a thorough investigation into their requests, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to fostering a harmonious environment for all religious groups.

He stated, “Providing comfortable places for preaching is crucial for controlling and reducing crime by educating and guiding people. When we have comfortable places where the word of God is preached, it helps reduce crime because people listen, learn, and the fear of God instills a deterrence against evil actions.”

Fubara continued, “It is not a mistake when you see churches and mosques. They help to reduce crime because when people go to worship centers, they listen to the word and the fear of God comes. Some evil actions are curtailed compared to when you are not even hearing anything, and what is available to you is just the opportunity to commit crime only.”

The governor urged the Muslim faithful to continue obeying the law and cooperating harmoniously with other residents, reaffirming the state government’s support in creating conducive worship environments.
