FCT Elections: APC Dominates Early Results From Nyanya

Early results from Nyanya Ward in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) indicate that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is leading, despite low voter turnout. At Polling Unit 016, APC garnered 13 votes in the chairmanship race, ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (1), Social Democratic Party (2), African Democratic Congress (5), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (1). In the councillorship contest at the same unit, APC secured 11 votes, with PDP receiving 1, SDP 0, ADC 4, and APGA 1. Only 22 of the 754 registered voters were accredited.

At Polling Unit 091, APC recorded 20 votes in the chairmanship race, while PDP and ADC each scored one vote. BOOT and the New Nigeria Peoples Party also received one vote apiece. In the councillorship contest, APC polled 11 votes, PDP 12, and BOOT 1. Out of 428 registered voters, 24 were accredited.

In Mpape and Dutse Alhaji Ward of Bwari Area Council, voters described the process as orderly and commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for improved logistics. Speaking at Polling Unit 077 in Mpape, Dutse Alhaji Ward, rights activist and rector Dr. Charles Nwodo urged citizens to remain vigilant and ensure their votes are protected.

“The truth is, votes will count if we, the voters, decide they will count. We must stay at our polling units after voting, ensure the votes are counted in our presence, and record the results,” he said, noting his satisfaction with the conduct of electoral officials. “The process is beautiful. From what I’m seeing here, INEC has done its best in this district. Everything is going smoothly, and the officials are performing admirably.”

On result transmission, Nwodo emphasized the importance of documentation and transparency. “Electronic transmission is ideal. Whatever is counted at the polling unit must be documented in our presence. We should snap it, post it, and keep records,” he advised. He also highlighted that strengthening institutions, particularly the judiciary, would bolster public confidence in elections.

INEC is conducting elections to fill six area council chairmanships and 62 councillor positions across 2,822 polling units, with over 1.6 million registered voters in the Federal Capital Territory. Collation of results was ongoing in several areas as of Saturday afternoon.
