Federal Government Halts Subsidized Rice Sales to Civil Servants Amid Nationwide Distribution Efforts

Federal Government has officially halted the sale of subsidized 50kg bags of rice to civil servants. This decision reverses a directive issued by the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs on August 1, 2024, which had permitted government employees to purchase rice at a reduced price.

To maintain transparency, the Joint Union Council of the Ministry appointed its chairman to oversee the rice distribution process. The ministry had outlined that each staff member could only buy one 50kg bag of rice. However, staff members were allowed to pool resources and share a single bag if needed. This arrangement was communicated to all departments and units to ensure that the staff was informed.

In a broader initiative, the Nigerian Government has set up centers across the country where citizens can purchase 50kg bags of rice at a subsidized price of N40,000 each. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, emphasized that this effort is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to easing the economic burden on Nigerians. The program is designed to make essential commodities like rice more affordable and accessible to the public.

This move by the government reflects its ongoing efforts to address the cost of living and ensure that essential goods are within reach for all Nigerians.
