the environment.
Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, made the statement during the inauguration of the Inter-Agency Committee on Fuels, which is tasked with promoting the use of low sulphur fuels and CNG in Nigeria.
Lawal emphasized that the use of cleaner fuels would significantly reduce air pollution and address health issues caused by high sulphur content in petroleum products. He highlighted the negative impact of high sulphur fuels on public health, linking them to an increase in respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic lung diseases.
The minister further noted that high sulphur levels in fuels contribute to extreme weather, poor air quality, and other adverse effects of climate change. He assured that the government would continue to educate the public on the benefits of these cleaner alternatives.
Lawal also pointed out that the revised Nigeria Industrial Standards for sulphur content in petrol, diesel, and kerosene were developed with the support of key stakeholders. In her remarks, Mrs. Bahijjatu Abubakar, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health at the Ministry of Environment, expressed gratitude to committee members for their commitment to achieving cleaner air and a healthier environment.
