FG, Nigerian Legion Team Up To Deliver Affordable Homes For Military Veterans

According to Ireporter Online, the Nigerian Legion has entered into a partnership with the Federal Government to develop affordable housing estates for military veterans, as part of broader efforts to guarantee a dignified and secure transition from active service to retirement.

The initiative is designed to ensure that retired military personnel are not left without shelter after years of dedicated service to the country. Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the wreath-laying ceremony marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Ms Grace Henry, said the programme reflects a renewed commitment to the welfare of veterans and their families.

She explained that the Legion was introducing a new framework that would provide housing and a sense of belonging for ex-servicemen, widows, and their dependants, stressing that no veteran should retire into uncertainty or homelessness. Henry also noted that welfare conditions for veterans and widows had improved in recent months, particularly with pension payments becoming more consistent.

According to her, the regular payment of pensions has led to a noticeable decline in street protests previously staged by retired personnel, bringing relief to many veterans and their families. She described the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as a holistic programme that not only honours fallen heroes but also recognises the contributions of serving and retired military personnel.

Henry further stated that the expansion of the remembrance activities into a week-long event had helped to raise public awareness about the sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces and underscored the need for sustained support for veterans and their families.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the five-man Ministerial Committee on Military Veterans’ Welfare, Air Commodore Femi Oguntuyi (retd), said the committee was actively engaging the Federal Government on key welfare issues affecting veterans nationwide. He identified priority areas to include a review of veterans’ salary structures, improved medical care for disabled ex-servicemen, and fair payment of post-service entitlements.

Oguntuyi acknowledged that progress had been gradual but expressed optimism that ongoing discussions would translate into meaningful improvements in the living conditions of military veterans across the country.
