FG’s Bold Move: $30 Billion Domiciliary Deposits Face Conversion To Naira Amid Naira’s Worst Fall
In a strategic bid to stabilize the Nigerian naira following its historic 24% depreciation, the Federal Government is contemplating a groundbreaking policy. Reports suggest that the government is considering converting foreign currencies in domiciliary accounts, totaling over $30 billion, into naira….READ MORE
The unprecedented fall of the naira, closing at N1,348 per dollar in the official Foreign Exchange Market, has triggered this bold move. The proposed policy involves ordering the conversion of idle foreign currencies in both individual and corporate domiciliary accounts into naira, with the rate to be determined by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This drastic measure aims to address forex scarcity and fortify the struggling national currency.
Presidency sources highlight that the forex scarcity and naira depreciation are primarily issues affecting the elite. The Federal Government is determined to take decisive action against those hoarding foreign currencies, which has adversely impacted the naira’s value. The proposed initiative challenges the notion of keeping dollars in domiciliary accounts, urging individuals and companies to convert their foreign currency earnings promptly.
If implemented, this policy shift will mark a significant turn in the administration’s approach, as it previously sought to attract funds held in domiciliary accounts for massive investments in various sectors. The move is part of a broader effort to rejuvenate the economy and encourage Nigerians abroad to invest in the local economy.
While this initiative aims to address economic challenges, it sparks questions about the logistics and impact of converting such significant amounts of foreign currency. The government faces the challenge of determining an equitable conversion rate and addressing potential complexities in executing this sweeping policy change.
