Former Senate Chief Whip Blasts Akpabio, Says Natasha’s Suspension Threatens Senate’s Credibility

Former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Rowland Owie, has strongly criticized the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, warning that such actions could damage the credibility of the 10th Senate. He emphasized that no senator should be unjustly removed from their position and urged the Senate to adhere to due process.

How the Controversy Began
The dispute over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension arose following a heated confrontation on February 20, 2025. The senator had protested against the reassignment of her Senate seat by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The situation escalated when she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, an allegation initially blocked from discussion but later referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

Despite citing a court order preventing the Senate from investigating her, Akpoti-Uduaghan refused to appear before the Ethics Committee. However, the Senate proceeded with disciplinary measures and suspended her for six months.

Owie Calls for Due Process
Senator Owie insisted that the Senate should have conducted a fair and transparent investigation. He further argued that Akpabio should have stepped aside to ensure an impartial inquiry.

“I have always warned that the 10th Senate must be cautious to prevent harming the integrity of the Upper Chamber. Any issues presented before the Senate must be properly investigated—nothing should be overlooked. Ideally, the Senate President should step down to allow a fair process,” Owie stated.

Akpoti-Uduaghan Rejects Suspension
In her response, Akpoti-Uduaghan dismissed the suspension as illegal and unjust, claiming it violates the principles of fairness and justice.

“The Senate’s culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming is unacceptable. My suspension is unfair and does not align with principles of natural justice,” she said.

She further insisted that the suspension does not take away her legitimacy as a senator.

“This unlawful suspension does not invalidate my role as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I remain committed to serving my constituents and my country to the best of my ability until 2027 and beyond,” she affirmed.
