From Nigeria To Naval Glory: Kelechi Ndukwe Becomes U.S. Navy Commander
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has congratulated Captain Kelechi Ndukwe, a Nigerian-American officer, on his elevation to Commander of Destroyer Squadron 60 and Task Force 65 of the United States Navy, headquartered in Rota, Spain.
According to Ireporter Online, the announcement was made on September 26, 2025, in Abuja through a statement signed by Gabriel Odu of NIDCOM’s Media, Public Relations, and Protocols unit. With this promotion, Ndukwe will take charge of U.S. Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean.
Ndukwe’s new role underscores his years of distinguished service and leadership in international naval operations. He had earlier broken barriers in April 2021 by becoming the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97).
Born to Nigerian immigrant parents, Ndukwe’s rise through the ranks of the U.S. Navy has been widely hailed as a testament to discipline, dedication, and professional excellence.
NIDCOM emphasized that his promotion is not only a personal achievement but also a source of pride for Nigeria, the global naval community, and Nigerians in the diaspora. The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerians abroad who continue to make positive global impact.
Once again, NIDCOM extended its warm congratulations to Commander Ndukwe, describing his remarkable career as a beacon of inspiration for Nigerians worldwide.
