From Turkey To Thailand: Nigerian Footballers Make Global Impact Last Weekend
Nigerian footballers showcased remarkable performances across various leagues over the past weekend, contributing goals, assists, and key displays that helped their clubs secure vital results.
In Turkey, Wilfred Ndidi marked a significant career milestone by making his 400th club appearance in Beşiktaş’s 2-0 triumph over Karagumruk. The defensive midfielder played a pivotal role in controlling the midfield alongside Orkun Kokcu, helping his team maintain its sixth-place standing in the league. Ndidi’s journey from Genk to Leicester City and now Beşiktaş has been defined by consistency, and this milestone highlighted his continued impact at the club level.
In Italy, Ademola Lookman returned to the scoresheet for Atalanta, netting in the 51st minute following a loose ball from a corner in a 2-0 win against Fiorentina. This goal, the club’s first from a set-piece this season, was Lookman’s second Serie A strike of the campaign and underlined his importance ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
England also saw Nigerian stars shine. Samuel Chukwueze was instrumental in Fulham’s 2-1 Premier League victory at Tottenham, providing a decisive fourth-minute assist for Kenny Tete and earning the Man of the Match award. Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey contributed significantly, with Iwobi completing twelve appearances this season and Bassey maintaining his defensive consistency.
Paul Onuachu continued his scoring streak for Trabzonspor, netting twice in a 3-1 home win over Konyaspor, extending his tally to ten goals in 14 league matches and maintaining his position as the league’s top scorer. Semi Ajayi scored his first goal for Hull City in a 2-1 win at Stoke City, while Josh Maja set up the match-winning goal for West Bromwich Albion in their 3-2 comeback against Swansea City.
