Governor Otti Backs Additional State for South East, Renews Call for State Police
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reiterated his support for the creation of an additional state in the South East region, emphasizing the need for regional balance in Nigeria’s geopolitical structure.
Speaking after a private meeting with Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, in Umuahia on Saturday, Otti lamented that the South East remains the only region with just five states, while others have six or more.
“Every other zone has six states, and the North-West even has seven. The South East deserves a sixth state to correct this imbalance,” he said.
The governor also renewed his advocacy for the establishment of state police, aligning with the calls of other governors who believe localized policing would significantly improve internal security.
Otti emphasized that both Abia and Enugu states are committed to enhancing regional security and ensuring that displaced criminals do not find refuge across state borders.
Governor Mbah echoed similar sentiments, noting that his visit was centered on mutual collaboration aimed at delivering improved governance and quality of life for residents of both states.
