More than 45 African Heads of State are set to converge in Addis Ababa this September for the highly anticipated Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), where the spotlight will be on solving Africa’s widening climate finance gap.

A communique released following an exclusive virtual media briefing revealed that the ACS2 will be jointly convened by the Government of Ethiopia and the African Union Commission (AUC).

With the theme “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development,” this year’s summit aims to implement the bold commitments agreed upon during the 2023 inaugural summit, including the Nairobi Declaration—a unified eleven-point call to climate action.

The summit’s twin pillars—highlighting Africa-led climate solutions and unlocking scalable climate finance—seek to reposition the continent as a climate action leader rather than a perennial victim.

ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, African nations remain among the most vulnerable to climate change impacts, despite accounting for less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, they continue to divert more than 5% of GDP toward climate response efforts, often at the expense of essential sectors like health and education.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna has recently emphasized the importance of prioritizing agriculture and renewable energy in climate response efforts, setting an example for localized action.

Similarly, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Planning, Seyoum Mekonen, stressed that “ACS2 is not just another event—it’s Africa’s moment to lead.” His sentiments echo those of African Union leaders, who argue that Africa’s solar energy potential and abundant critical minerals position the continent to become a hub for renewable energy and green industrialization.

ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, key outcomes of the summit will include a flagship report spotlighting African-led projects already delivering real-world results—from drought-resilient agriculture and digital forest protection to large-scale solar irrigation systems. These innovations will not only showcase Africa’s leadership but also reinforce its demand for a restructured global climate finance architecture—one that prioritizes accessibility, grants over loans, and highly concessional adaptation financing.

Abas Mohammed, co-chair of the ACS2 Program Committee, confirmed that more than 400 side events have been registered, alongside 74 pavilion spaces and 25 high-level consultations with AU Member States, development partners, and civil society.

Meanwhile, Mr. Harsan Nyambe of the AUC’s Sustainable Environment Division emphasized the importance of localized early warning systems to address multi-year droughts, flash floods, and other climate shocks devastating agriculture and food security across the continent.

The world is watching as Africa prepares to speak with one voice on climate justice. ACS2 will set the tone for the continent’s formal position heading into COP30, asserting that Africa is not waiting for handouts—it is leading from the front.
