Healthcare Under Fire: Bandits Invade Katsina Hospital, Abduct Staff

Gunmen suspected to be bandits launched a violent attack on the Kankara General Hospital in Katsina State, North-West Nigeria, on Tuesday night. Dr. Murtala Saleh, a medical professional on duty at the time, sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh, while another individual, Kamala Suleiman, was injured in the knee. Both victims are currently receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition, according to the Katsina State Police Command.

The attack escalated into a gunfight between the assailants and security personnel stationed nearby. Despite the resistance, three individuals were abducted during the incident.

Police spokesperson Abubakar Aliyu confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted victims and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Musa, strongly condemned the assault, describing it as a “senseless attack on healthcare workers and facilities.” He has ordered additional security measures in the area and intensified efforts to track down the attackers.

Recent Successes in Combating Banditry
Just last week, a joint operation by security forces led to the neutralization of a notorious bandit leader, known as “Baƙo-baƙo,” in Batsari Forest. The collaborative mission involved the Nigerian Army, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Katsina Security Watch Corps.

According to security sources, the operation, which was meticulously planned and executed under cover of darkness, dealt a significant blow to bandit activities in the region.

Baƙo-baƙo, infamous for orchestrating violent attacks and kidnappings, had long been a major threat in Katsina State. His death marks a significant milestone in efforts to combat insecurity and restore peace to the region.

The recent hospital attack underscores the ongoing challenges posed by banditry, even as security forces continue their efforts to tackle the menace.
