Historic Partnership: Tinubu and Mbasogo Sign Pivotal Gulf of Guinea Gas Pipeline Agreement

Significant move to bolster energy cooperation and development across Africa, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea have signed a landmark agreement on the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project. The signing, which took place on Wednesday evening in Malabo, marks a new era of partnership between the two nations.

The comprehensive agreement outlines crucial aspects of the pipeline project, including legislative and regulatory frameworks, establishment and operation protocols, natural gas transit, and ownership rights. This project is expected to not only enhance energy security in the region but also create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

During his remarks, President Tinubu, who is on a three-day official visit to Equatorial Guinea, emphasized the potential of this agreement to unlock new avenues for gas exploration and job creation. He highlighted that his discussions with President Mbasogo covered a range of issues vital to Africa’s progress, including conflict resolution, food security, and multilateral cooperation.

“Concerning Africa, conflicts and conflict resolution were discussed. We explored various areas of conflicts and what we can do to promote peace,” said Tinubu. “In the same way that Europe and America have resolved their conflicts, we must focus on building capital, advancing industrialization, and investing in research and development to navigate our challenges.”

President Tinubu further stressed the importance of finding homegrown solutions to the continent’s issues, referencing the ongoing security challenges and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as key topics of discussion.

President Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea echoed these sentiments, noting the longstanding and fruitful bilateral relations with Nigeria. He emphasized the strategic importance of the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project for Africa’s development and reiterated the shared vision of securing a permanent African seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The signing ceremony was attended by key Nigerian officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of State, Petroleum, Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo; and Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim-Biu.

This historic agreement underscores the commitment of both nations to advancing Africa’s energy sector and fostering deeper cooperation across the continent.
