House Of Reps Reveals Position On FG’s Refusal To Pay Lecturers During ASUU Strike
According to the House of Representatives, the government is not required to pay the salaries of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for the time they were on strike.
In a statement, House Spokesperson Mr Benjamin Kalu argued that the decision was in accordance with established rules and regulations.
“This is a settled matter in law. See S. 43(1)(a) Trade Disputes Act, Cap T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN). The Executive decision not to pay salaries to lecturers for the time spent on strike is warranted by the government’s legitimate interest in preventing moral hazard and discouraging disruptive industrial actions,” the House noted.
Despite Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila’s interventions for ASUU’s exemption on the issue, Kalu stated that the Speaker of the House of Representatives never committed to offset the arrears of salaries owed to union members for the time they were on strike.
The House was reacting to ASUU president Emmanuel Osodeke’s claim that Gbajabiamila used deception to persuade the union to end its strike action.
According to Osodeke, the Speaker failed to deliver on his written commitment that the government would immediately offset the arrears of salaries owed to union members during the strike.
While casting aspersions on Osodeke, the House maintained that his bad-faith approach to negotiations and penchant for political brinkmanship were significant reasons for the universities’ long strike.
The House also accused Osodeke of endangering the progress being made to avoid further disruptions to the academic calendars of the universities.
As a result, the House demanded that Osodeke stop making false statements about the House of Representatives and its Speaker, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila.
