How Yoruba Exchange with Ajayi Sparked Osimhen’s Spectacular AFCON Goal
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed how a brief exchange in Yoruba with teammate Semi Ajayi led to his stunning goal in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Benin Republic during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, saw Ademola Lookman net two goals before Osimhen came off the bench in the second half to seal the win with an acrobatic finish. In an interview on the Counter Attack Podcast, Osimhen shared the behind-the-scenes moment that paved the way for his impressive goal.
Ahead of the game, Osimhen and teammates Aina, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Wilfred Ndidi worked extensively on perfecting crosses into the penalty area during their final training session. This meticulous preparation gave Osimhen the confidence and precision needed when the opportunity arose.
During the match, as Ndidi delivered a well-placed cross into the box, both Ajayi and Osimhen moved toward the ball. Realizing he had the better angle, Osimhen quickly called out to Ajayi in Yoruba, saying “filẹ, filẹ”—which translates to “leave it.” Ajayi immediately understood the command, stepping aside to give Osimhen the space to execute his goal-scoring acrobatics.
Reflecting on the moment, Osimhen admitted that he has re-watched the goal multiple times, highlighting how their teamwork and clear communication played a crucial role in securing the third goal for Nigeria.
This goal further demonstrated Osimhen’s remarkable instincts and chemistry with his teammates, underscoring the importance of preparation and quick thinking on the field.
