I Don’t Believe In The Islamic Or Christian God’ – Wole Soyinka Sparks Debate Online

Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has stated that he does not subscribe to the concept of God as portrayed in Christianity or Islam. According to credible media reports, the renowned playwright made the remarks during an interview with Larry Madowo on CNN, where he discussed his spiritual beliefs and personal experiences.

Soyinka explained that his upbringing exposed him to both Christian teachings and traditional Yoruba religious practices, particularly Orisa worship, which he said had a stronger influence on him. He described Orisa as more artistic, creative, and mysterious compared to the structured doctrines of Christianity and Islam, adding that its openness and inclusive nature distinguish it from other religions.

He further noted that the non-violent and accommodating spirit of Orisa worship has allowed external religious influences to permeate and, in some cases, alter its original essence. Reflecting on his personal convictions, Soyinka maintained that he does not believe in the Islamic or Christian conception of God and acknowledged that such a stance may lead some to label him an atheist, a characterization he does not reject. He, however, emphasized his belief that all humans possess an inherent spiritual core, describing himself as someone deeply attuned to spiritual awareness.
