I Will Remove You From The Senate” – Akpabio, Oshiomhole Trade Words During Plenary Clash
According to Ireporter Online, a heated confrontation erupted during Wednesday’s plenary session between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, over alleged unruly conduct on the Senate floor.
The altercation reportedly began when Oshiomhole repeatedly interrupted proceedings while Akpabio was reading the Votes and Proceedings of a previous sitting, persistently shouting “Point of Order” despite attempts to proceed with legislative business. The disruption prompted a firm warning from the Senate President, who cautioned the former Edo State governor to adhere strictly to Senate rules, stressing that lawmakers are expected to conduct themselves in line with the decorum of the chamber.
Tensions escalated further as Akpabio directed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to advise Oshiomhole on parliamentary procedures, while Kalu described the senator’s repeated interjections as “tautological.” Despite the intervention, Oshiomhole continued to insist on being recognised, prolonging the standoff.
The Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno, also stepped in, warning that disciplinary measures could be invoked if the disruptions continued. Akpabio reinforced the warning, stating that continued disorderly conduct would not be tolerated, at one point declaring that he would “take [him] out of the Senate” if the rules were not respected.
Following the series of interventions and warnings from the presiding officers, Oshiomhole eventually subdued his actions, allowing plenary proceedings to continue. The incident is widely viewed as an extension of a previous clash between both lawmakers during Tuesday’s sitting, further intensifying political tensions within the chamber.
Observers have also linked the growing friction to broader political undercurrents, with some suggesting it reflects emerging power dynamics ahead of future leadership contests within the Senate.
