In certain nations, committing adultery, which involves engaging in sexual relations with someone other than one’s spouse while married, is considered a criminal offense.

Here are five countries where adultery is legally prohibited:

Indonesia
Indonesia enforces Sharia law, which expressly forbids adultery. Offenders can face a sentence of up to nine months in jail. Although the Indonesian government doesn’t have specific laws regarding infidelity, a significant portion of the population, particularly Muslims, adhere to Sharia. In the province of Aceh, laws have been established that prohibit individuals of opposite sexes from being alone together, and also criminalize adultery.
Nigeria
In Northern Nigeria, states still observe Sharia law, parts of which have been incorporated into the Penal Code. Adultery is deemed a criminal offense under this code. Sections 387 and 388 stipulate imprisonment for up to two years and/or a fine for those found guilty of adultery. However, in southern Nigeria, adultery is not considered a crime.
Taiwan
Taiwan penalizes adultery by imposing a four-month jail term for the third party involved, while cheating spouses can face up to a year in jail. Despite expressed desires by Taiwan’s Minister of Culture, Lung Ying-tai, to abolish this law, a 2013 survey revealed that 82.2% of respondents supported maintaining it.
Philippines
The Philippines imposes penalties on individuals who engage in sexual relations outside of their marriage. Both the unfaithful spouse and their paramour can face imprisonment. Women who commit adultery may be sentenced to up to six years in jail, while men may face up to four and a half years. If a husband is unfaithful, the woman involved may be exiled for four years and one day.
Somalia
In Somalia, any person who has previously been married, including those who have been divorced, and who engages in an extramarital affair can be charged with adultery. The punishment for this offense is stoning to death. Unmarried individuals who engage in premarital sex can be subjected to 100 lashes as a penalty.
