INEC’s National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, revealed the commission’s plans in a statement released on Tuesday night. Despite successful bye-elections in nine constituencies, issues marred the outcome in certain areas, notably the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency.

Olumekun highlighted incidents of overvoting and disruptions due to violence and thuggery, particularly in Enugu South State Constituency and Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency. As a result, INEC invoked Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, suspending rerun elections in affected regions.

While results were declared in some constituencies like Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, where disruptions didn’t affect the election’s outcome, Taraba and Enugu States are set for further electoral contests.

Taraba State will witness a supplementary election, while Enugu State gears up for a fresh rerun, both slated for Valentine’s Day. However, concerns over security have prompted the postponement of elections in Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency, pending discussions with security agencies and stakeholders.
