IPAC Warns Against State of Emergency in Benue, Accuses Plotters of Destabilization
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Benue State has raised concerns over alleged efforts to push President Bola Ahmed Tinubu into declaring a state of emergency in the state.
Ibrahim Idoko, the Benue IPAC chairman, made this statement at a Town Hall meeting organized by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria in Makurdi.
Key Points from IPAC Chairman’s Statement:
-
Governor Hyacinth Alia must act swiftly to prevent political scheming aimed at destabilizing Benue.
-
IPAC condemns the state of emergency imposed on Rivers State, calling it a dangerous precedent for Nigerian democracy.
-
Certain “elements” may already be working to create a crisis in Benue to justify an emergency rule.
-
Tinubu’s actions in Rivers could embolden the military, setting a risky precedent.
Idoko’s Warning to Governor Alia:
“Some individuals have started entertaining similar ideas in Benue State. I am aware of this. Some are pushing for such an outcome. However, I believe Governor Alia will act swiftly to manage the situation.”
He urged President Tinubu to ensure that the state of emergency in Rivers does not extend beyond six months, allowing Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resume his duties without interference.
Larger Implications for Nigeria’s Democracy
Idoko expressed concern that political instability in Rivers and Benue could damage Nigeria’s international reputation.
“Our democracy has come to stay, and the international community is watching us. Nigeria is a beacon of democracy in West Africa.”
With Benue and Rivers now in focus, do you think Tinubu’s emergency rule in Rivers is justified, or could it indeed set a dangerous political trend?
