JAMB Goes Fully Digital, Automates Question-Setting Process

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has successfully completed the final stage of its automation initiative with the digitisation of question-setting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to the board’s registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the milestone was achieved during a training programme for test developers held at the University of Ibadan. He noted that the automation of JAMB’s examination processes began a decade ago, and the current phase represents the tenth and final stage.

“This stage focuses on automating the authoring of questions. Our test developers can now create exam questions from their respective locations without the need to travel nationwide,” Oloyede stated. He added that the initiative is expected to streamline operations, reduce costs, minimize logistical challenges, enhance efficiency, and maintain strict examination security.

Oloyede further confirmed that the board has implemented robust checks and balances to safeguard the integrity of the system. Addressing concerns over candidate registration, he revealed that JAMB has expanded its Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres from approximately 800 in 2025 to over 1,000 in 2026 to facilitate smooth registration and examination.

“As of this morning, about two million candidates have completed registration, surpassing last year’s figures. Pin vending ends today, February 26, with no extension. Candidates who have obtained their pins are urged to finalize registration before the deadline,” he emphasized.

The registrar also cautioned against examination malpractice, warning candidates and parents that JAMB would take strict action against any attempts to circumvent the system. “There is no shortcut to education. We are monitoring the system closely, and any offenders will be apprehended,” he added.

University leaders have welcomed the automation initiative. The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adenike Oladeji, highlighted that the digitisation would enhance quality assurance and reduce the need for extensive post-UTME screening. Similarly, Prof. Olayinka Kareem, Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, praised the initiative for improving transparency, documenting test items effectively, and ensuring accurate evaluation of candidates.

Prof. Mahfuz Adedimeji, Vice-Chancellor of the African School of Economics, stated that the training aimed to equip test developers with the necessary skills to operate the digital platform, improving both efficiency and the quality of UTME questions.

The programme gathered advisers, directors, and test developers from universities, polytechnics, and secondary schools nationwide, marking a significant step in modernizing Nigeria’s tertiary entrance examination process, according to reports from Ireporter Online.
