Peter Obi: I Won’t Promise Nigerians 24-Hour Electricity

According to Ireporter Online, Obi made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television, explaining that the construction of new power plants and the expansion of transmission infrastructure require several years to complete.

While acknowledging the challenge, the former Anambra State governor stressed that improving electricity supply would remain a key priority of his administration. He noted that Nigeria’s biggest obstacle is not electricity generation alone but the inability to efficiently transmit and distribute the power already being produced.

Obi expressed confidence that the country could consistently generate, transmit and distribute more than 10,000 megawatts of electricity if the necessary investments and reforms are implemented, adding that the current transmission and distribution network remains the major bottleneck.

He also pledged to promote decentralised electricity solutions by replicating successful embedded power projects across major industrial centres. Citing the Geometric Power project in Aba as an example, Obi said similar initiatives could be extended to commercial and manufacturing hubs such as Bompai and Sharada in Kano to stimulate industrial growth and economic development.

The NDC flagbearer further promised to introduce greater transparency into the electricity sector, arguing that restoring investor confidence would require the Federal Government to settle outstanding debts owed to electricity generation companies.

According to Obi, clearing the huge financial obligations to power generation firms would encourage fresh investment and accelerate efforts to improve electricity supply across the country.
