A small jet carrying six individuals crashed into a bustling suburb of Philadelphia on Friday night, setting off fires that resulted in burned buildings and vehicles.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed to AFP that the Learjet, which had six people onboard, crashed around 2330 GMT in a densely populated area filled with homes, shops, and busy roads. However, the fate of those onboard remains unverified.

The Learjet 55 was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri and had taken off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The FAA stated they would investigate the incident alongside the National Transportation Safety Board.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that there were “reportedly” six individuals aboard the aircraft. There was no immediate confirmation regarding potential casualties.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on X, stating, “We are allocating all resources as emergency services respond to the small private plane crash in Northeast Philly. We will continue to provide updates as more details emerge.”

This incident follows close on the heels of a tragic collision between a passenger jet and a military helicopter near Washington’s Reagan National Airport, which resulted in 67 fatalities, marking the deadliest air disaster in the US in nearly 25 years.

‘Major Incident’

The crashed Learjet, identified by flight tracking service FlightAware, was used for transporting medical patients. Philadelphia’s Office of Emergency Management declared a “major incident” and advised the public to avoid the area as roads are closed nearby.

Numerous first responders were deployed to the scene near Roosevelt Mall, a shopping area with various retailers and dining options.

The police and fire department did not respond to inquiries for comment.

“Major incident near Cottman and Bustleton Avenues in Northeast Philadelphia across from Roosevelt Mall. Roads in the area are closed, including sections of Roosevelt Boulevard. Please avoid the area,” the city’s emergency management office announced on X.
