Jos K!ll!ngs: Gov. Mutfwang Reveals Why Security Operatives Were Unprepared
Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has attributed the recent deadly attack in Jos to a lapse in vigilance caused by the prolonged period of relative peace in the area, noting that both residents and security operatives were taken by surprise.
According to reports from Ireporter Online, the governor made this known during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he explained that the attackers carefully studied the community’s behavioural patterns before launching the assault. He revealed that the assailants disguised their operation to resemble that of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which frequently conducts raids in nearby areas.
Mutfwang stated that the attackers exploited the familiarity residents had with NDLEA operations, arriving in a similar manner and opening fire, leading many to initially believe it was a routine enforcement exercise. This misinterpretation, he said, delayed any form of resistance, allowing the attackers to inflict significant harm before fleeing the scene.
The governor described the incident as deeply troubling, especially as it occurred within the city centre, but maintained optimism that it would not become a recurring situation. He emphasized that the calm experienced over the past 10 to 12 months had contributed to a reduced sense of alertness among both civilians and security personnel, ultimately making the attack more devastating.
Despite the tragic development, Mutfwang expressed hope that the situation would be contained and reassured residents of efforts to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
