Just In: Advocacy-Group Urges Ebonyi State Governor To Enforce Disability-Rights Legislation (Details)

Voice of Disability (VDI), a non-governmental organization dedicated to safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities, particularly women and girls, has joined forces with the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities to call upon Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, to implement legislation against discrimination of persons with disabilities within the state.

In a joint communique signed by Barrister Catherine Edeh, Director of VDI, the groups emphasized the urgent need for the state to domesticate laws aimed at protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. Additionally, they urged for the establishment of a dedicated Commission for Persons with Disabilities, advocating for its direct oversight by the governor.

Highlighting the importance of such a commission, the groups emphasized its role in addressing the various challenges faced by persons with disabilities and ensuring their full inclusion in societal affairs.

Furthermore, VDI and the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities called for the creation of disability desks within government institutions, particularly healthcare facilities. They stressed the importance of these desks in facilitating access to healthcare services for persons with disabilities. Additionally, they advocated for the engagement of sign language interpreters to further enhance accessibility in these institutions.

The groups underscored the significance of these initiatives in promoting inclusivity and ensuring that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate in all aspects of society.
