Just In: Federal-Government Insists On ₦494,000 As Unattainable Minimum-Wage (Details)
In a recent statement by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the Federal Government of Nigeria has firmly stated its inability to meet the ₦494,000 minimum wage demand put forth by organized labor. This declaration comes amidst looming threats of nationwide strikes from the labor unions.
Idris highlighted the staggering financial burden that would be imposed on the government, amounting to a monumental ₦9.5 trillion, should the proposed wage hike be implemented. Expressing concerns over its sustainability and the potential for widespread job losses, he urged labor leaders to return to the negotiating table for more reasonable wage discussions.
Despite the government’s commitment to worker welfare, exemplified by its continued adherence to the ₦35,000 wage award, Idris emphasized the need for a balanced approach that considers the broader economic implications. While labor advocates for a substantial increase representing a 1,547% rise from the existing wage, the government prioritizes an affordable, sustainable minimum wage that safeguards against economic destabilization.
Idris underscored the government’s responsibility towards the welfare of all citizens, emphasizing the need for a minimum wage figure that aligns with the nation’s economic realities. As discussions continue, finding a middle ground that addresses both labor’s demands and economic stability remains paramount.
