JUST IN: How Tribunal Dismissed 3 Petitions Against Tinubu’s APC Victory In Feb 25 Election

The National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has rejected three petitions filed by dissatisfied candidates challenging the results of the National Assembly elections held on February 25, 2023.

In its verdict, the tribunal dismissed a petition lodged by Senator Biodun Olujimi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who contested the election against Senator Yemi Adaramodu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti South senatorial district.

The tribunal found no evidence of malpractice or overvoting, as claimed in Olujimi’s petition, and ruled in favor of Senator Adaramodu.

Additionally, the tribunal dismissed petitions filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Engr Dare Bankole, a PDP candidate in Ekiti/Oke-Ero/Irepodun/Isin Federal Constituency for the House of Representatives election, as well as another petition filed by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) regarding the election in Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Federal Constituency of Kwara State.

In its judgment on Senator Olujimi’s petition, Justice J.O. Abdulmalik concluded that there was no evidence of corruption or overvoting in the Ekiti South senatorial district election. The tribunal ordered Senator Olujimi to pay a fine of N300,000, to be distributed among the three respondents, including INEC, Senator Adaramodu, and the APC.

Concerning Dare Bankole’s petition against INEC regarding the election in Ekiti/Oke-Ero/Irepodun/Isin Federal Constituency, Justice Abdulmalik dismissed the petition and ordered Bankole to pay a fine of N600,000 to the respondents, which included INEC, Hon. Raheem Ajuloopin, and the APC. Bankole had alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act and malpractices during the election but failed to substantiate his claims before the tribunal.

In another judgment issued by Chief Magistrate Izabi Bashir, the tribunal rejected a petition filed by the NNPP regarding the election held in Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Federal Constituency on February 25, 2023. The tribunal ruled that the petitioner had not provided sufficient evidence of non-compliance with the Electoral Act and corrupt practices by the APC and its candidate, Hon. Tijani Bashir. As a result, the tribunal ordered the petitioner to pay a fine of N200,000 to each of the three respondents.
