JUST IN: NLC Bars Entrance To Court As Tribunals Adjourn Judgements (DETAILS)

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State has taken measures to enforce a two-day warning strike, including blocking access to the state high court premises.

Today, two judgments in election petitions for the National Assembly and state House of Assembly were scheduled, but they have been postponed until Thursday.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, declared the warning strike on Friday to protest the Federal Government’s failure to address the challenges arising from the removal of fuel subsidies.

In his inaugural speech on May 29, President Bola Tinubu announced that “fuel subsidy is gone,” leading to a significant increase in fuel prices nationwide and a rising cost of living.

The labor union accuses the Federal Government of neglecting negotiations and failing to implement some of the resolutions from previous meetings.

On August 2, organized labor protested against what they described as the anti-people policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliated unions staged demonstrations in several states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), demanding the immediate reversal of anti-poor policies, including the recent fuel price hike, increased public school fees, and the release of eight months’ withheld salaries for university lecturers and workers.

The unions also called for an increase in the minimum wage from N30,000 to N200,000, stating that since President Tinubu’s “subsidy is gone” inauguration speech in May 2023, Nigerians’ peace of mind has been disrupted.

Numerous meetings between the Presidency and the unions on palliatives for Nigerians affected by the removal of petrol subsidies have failed to yield results.
