Just In: One Person Dead, Many Injured As Farmers, Herders Clash In Yobe (View Details)
A tragic clash between farmers and herders in various communities across Yobe State has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, according to a statement from the Yobe State Police Command.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed that 14 incidents of violence between farmers and herders have been reported recently, leading to significant loss of lives and property.
One of the incidents occurred in Gazarkuma village, Nangere local government area, where youths reportedly mobilized by the village head attacked farm laborers in Gubate village. This confrontation resulted in the death of a 35-year-old tractor driver, Mohammed Kabiru, while another person sustained severe injuries.
Similarly, on June 26th, 2024, in Damagum, Abduwahab Abubakar and four other suspects were arrested for attacking and robbing Hussaini Lawan Sani of Goba Abba Village of N250,000. The suspects are currently in custody, with an ongoing investigation at the State CID.
The Police attributed the recurring conflicts to delayed reporting of disputes, unresolved land disputes, and informal land allocation arrangements. They warned that individuals taking the law into their own hands for personal gain would face arrest and prosecution.
In response to these incidents, the State Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, reiterated the Command’s commitment to addressing agricultural-related conflicts. He announced plans to implement community engagement programs across local government areas, encourage early resolution of disputes, and enhance surveillance to curb criminal activities.
As tensions remain high in affected communities, stakeholders are urged to prioritize peaceful coexistence and respect for the rule of law to prevent further bloodshed and restore harmony in Yobe State.
