Just In: UNIZIK Refuses To Accept FG’s Removal Of VC And Registrar

On Friday, the Federal Ministry of Education informed the university’s governing council chair, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, that the appointments had failed to follow established procedures. The ministry requested the suspension of all appointments until a new Minister of Education assumes office.

However, Registrar and Governing Council Secretary Nwokike disputed the claims, stating that the council had adhered to all necessary protocols. She emphasized that no formal meeting occurred with the Minister of State for Education, only informal discussions between the outgoing Minister of State and the council.

In response to concerns about absent stakeholders during the Vice Chancellor’s appointment meeting on October 29, 2024, Nwokike clarified that all parties had been notified and were given the chance to attend. The meeting included Federal Character Commission representatives and internal and external council members, ensuring a broad range of voices were represented.

Nwokike also confirmed that a quorum was established in line with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act, and that the appointment process for the Vice Chancellor and Registrar followed due diligence. “Of the 18 applicants, 15 attended the interview, and score sheets were accurately documented. The council acted within its authority, maintaining transparency and university regulations,” she concluded.

Professor Odoh’s appointment has received mixed reactions, with both celebrations and protests within the university. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns about Odoh’s qualifications and his status as a professor.
