JUST IN: US Supreme Court Declines To Speed Up Ruling On Trump Immunity Claim (WHAT TO KNOW)
The United States Supreme Court has rejected an expedited review of whether former President Donald Trump can claim immunity for his actions to overturn the 2020 election.
The request by US Special Counsel Jack Smith was rebuffed on Friday, and the matter will now return to a lower court for further examination.
This decision comes amidst various legal challenges faced by Trump, some linked to his attempts to retain power after the 2020 election despite losing to current President Joe Biden.

A recent ruling in Colorado disqualified Trump from appearing on the state’s 2024 election ballot due to his role in the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol.
Trump argues for immunity from charges related to election overturn efforts, asserting that former presidents cannot face charges for actions tied to their official duties. Prosecutor Jack Smith alleges that Trump obstructed Congress and defrauded the US government in his broad campaign to reject the voters’ will.

Despite findings by a Congressional panel that Trump knew his claims of election fraud lacked evidence, his popularity within the Republican Party remains strong, positioning him as a leading contender for the 2024 presidential election. A December 1 ruling by US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, stating that Trump is not immune from prosecution, has been appealed, putting the trial on hold.
Special Counselor Smith sought Supreme Court intervention to expedite the trial, but the court declined, redirecting the matter to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, signaling an intention to swiftly resolve the case.
