Chairman Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado revealed the development to reporters after overseeing the sealing operation at Dawanau International Grains Market, Singer Market, and Kwari Textiles Market on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
According to Rimingado, the owners of the warehouses were conspicuously absent during the operation, leaving behind stacked warehouses filled with goods like spaghetti, rice, pasta, sugar, and other essential food items.
He emphasized that these owners had been served notices to appear before the commission and face legal repercussions for their illicit activities.
Rimingado outlined the significant impact of the commission’s actions in halting the sudden surge in commodity prices, citing a notable decrease in rice prices following the crackdown.
Moreover, he expressed disbelief at claims that the hoarded goods belonged to the World Food Programme, questioning the ethics of such actions while prices in local markets skyrocketed.
The chairman stressed that the commission would not tolerate such practices, highlighting the substantial value of the seized commodities and the need for immediate action to curb hoarding.
Rimingado affirmed the commission’s commitment to upholding market transparency and vowed to make arrests as necessary to combat this illicit activity, underscoring the importance of intelligence-gathering in their operations.
