Kano Emirate Crisis: Judiciary Becomes Government’s Latest Target, Says Group

The Kano Democratic Vanguard (KDV) has strongly condemned the recent ruling by Justice Amina Aliyu of the Kano State High Court, which granted an order of perpetual injunction barring Aminu Ado-Bayero and four other deposed Emirs from identifying as Emirs.

Describing the judgment as biased and a flagrant disregard for justice, the KDV asserted that it undermines the rule of law and cultural norms.

“The judiciary has now fallen prey to the Kano State government’s agenda, as evidenced by this ruling,” the group lamented.

According to the KDV, the decision marks another step in the government’s ongoing efforts to consolidate power and disrupt traditional institutions in Kano.

“The court has effectively become an extension of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s political maneuvers, complicit in dismantling Kano’s longstanding traditional structure,” the group alleged.

They further criticized the state’s abolition of the historic Kano Emirate, the removal of Emir Ado Bayero, and the contentious reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi, actions they claim defy public sentiment and legal precedent.

“The Kano Democratic Vanguard vehemently opposes these actions, which undermine democracy and justice,” the group asserted.

Demanding a reversal of the judgment and the reinstatement of Emir Ado Bayero, the KDV called upon the people of Kano to resist what they perceive as an injustice against their cultural heritage.

“We stand with the rightful Emir and the people of Kano in their struggle against oppression,” the KDV stated emphatically.

In conclusion, the group urged Kano citizens to unite against what they view as government overreach and to advocate for the restoration of their traditional institutions.

“We will not stand idly by as our heritage is dismantled. Truth will prevail, and justice will be served,” the statement concluded.

Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu’s ruling on Monday, July 15, upheld the Kano State House of Assembly’s authority to amend legislation for the state’s governance and endorsed the state governor’s prerogative to enact such laws.

The ruling also mandated the deposed Emirs to surrender all assets belonging to the Kano State Emirate Council to the government, while instructing security forces to uphold the new legislation without violation.
