The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has recovered several government vehicles from former commissioners who resigned from office but allegedly failed to return official property in their custody.

According to Ireporter Online, the recovery operation was carried out on Thursday after repeated directives and requests for the vehicles’ return were reportedly ignored. Those affected by the exercise include Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umar (retd), former Commissioner for Internal Security; Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Commissioner for Youth and Sports; Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, former Commissioner for Science and Technology; Dr. Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, former Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs; and Hon. Nasiru Sani Garo, former Commissioner for Special Projects.

The commission’s chairman stated that the move followed formal complaints and official notifications from the Secretary to the Kano State Government, urging the recovery of state-owned assets still in the possession of former public office holders.

Preliminary findings, as reported by the commission, indicated that some of the original vehicles had allegedly been sold and substituted with other vehicles. During the exercise, five vehicles were retrieved, although only two were confirmed to be the original government-issued units. The commission disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether proceeds from the reportedly sold vehicles were used to acquire the replacements or if further irregularities were involved.

Officials of the commission dismissed allegations of political motivation, maintaining that the operation was strictly in line with their statutory responsibility to safeguard public resources. They further emphasized that the agency will sustain oversight of government assets and take necessary action against any current or former official who fails to comply with asset return regulations.
