Kano NNPP Crisis Escalates As Abiya Emerges Acting Chairman
The internal crisis within the Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has intensified with the emergence of Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya as the party’s Acting State Chairman. According to Ireporter Online, Abiya’s appointment followed the removal of the former chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, whose leadership reportedly lost legitimacy after his dismissal at the ward level.
The decision to appoint Abiya was ratified by the NNPP State Executive Committee during an emergency meeting convened at the party’s secretariat in Kano. Party officials said the meeting was called to address growing concerns over internal discipline and leadership disputes within the state chapter.
Speaking on the development, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, explained that Abiya’s emergence was carried out in strict compliance with the NNPP constitution. He noted that the State Executive Committee acted within the framework of due process and existing party regulations.
Further findings revealed that the action stemmed from a formal resolution submitted by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee, which recommended the removal and expulsion of Dungurawa from the party. The resolution originated from the Gargari Ward Executive Committee and was later forwarded to the state leadership for consideration.
Party insiders disclosed that the resolution was adopted during the second executive meeting of the Gargari Ward, held two weeks after the general election. Ward officials accused the former chairman of engaging in activities deemed detrimental to the party’s interests, prompting calls for decisive action against him.
After carefully reviewing the reports and recommendations from the ward and local government executives, the State Executive Committee approved the decision and confirmed Abiya as Acting State Chairman. Party leaders said the move was aimed at restoring order, reinforcing unity and repositioning the NNPP for future political engagements in Kano State.
Reacting to his appointment, Abiya assured party members of inclusive leadership and fairness. He pledged to promote unity within the party while maintaining loyalty to the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf. Abiya also expressed his commitment to stabilising the party and consolidating its political achievements ahead of future elections.
