Kano Political Shake-Up: Full List Of Federal, State Lawmakers Who Quit NNPP

According to Ireporter Online, Kano State’s political landscape has witnessed a major shake-up following the resignation of 22 members of the State House of Assembly and eight members of the House of Representatives from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The lawmakers announced their defection on Saturday, declaring their alignment with the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The mass exit has significantly diminished the NNPP’s presence and influence within both the state and federal legislative structures in Kano.

The development was confirmed through separate statements issued by the spokesperson to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaluddeen Shawai, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sanusi Bature. While Shawai released the names of the 22 defecting state legislators, Bature disclosed the identities of the eight federal lawmakers who left the party in solidarity with the governor’s leadership.

Bature stated that the lawmakers had collectively reaffirmed their support for Governor Yusuf’s administration, describing the move as a show of confidence in the current government.

Following the defections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has consolidated its dominance in the 40-member Kano State House of Assembly, now controlling 36 seats. The NNPP, which secured 26 seats after the 2023 general elections, has been reduced to just two lawmakers representing Kiru and Nasarawa constituencies. Two additional seats—Ungogo and Kano Municipal—remain vacant due to the demise of their representatives.

At the federal level, Kano State has 24 constituencies in the House of Representatives. Although the NNPP initially won 18 seats, several prominent lawmakers, including Abdulmumin Jibrin, Sagir Koki, Alhassan Rurum, and Abdullahi Sani, had earlier defected to the APC.

With the latest wave of defections, the APC now controls 19 of Kano’s 24 federal seats, leaving the NNPP with only five constituencies: Kura/Garun Malam/Madobi, Wudil/Garko, Tarauni, Ungogo/Minjibir, and Warawa/Dawakin Kudu.

Meanwhile, Aliyu Madaki, the House Minority Leader representing Dala, remains nominally aligned with the NNPP. However, his continued distance from the Kwankwasiyya political movement has raised questions about his long-term political affiliation.

The list of defecting lawmakers includes eight federal legislators and 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, among them the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader, and other principal officers, marking one of the most significant political realignments in Kano State in recent years.
