Kebbi Residents Loot Government And Private Warehouses Amid Speculations

A government warehouse located in the Bayan Kara area of Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State, was targeted by residents who raided it on Saturday night, making away with food items. In addition to the government warehouse, a broken-down truck carrying assorted grains meant for distribution in Birnin Kebbi was also looted by the hoodlums. These incidents occurred against the backdrop of a prevailing cost-of-living crisis attributed to the removal of petrol subsidies and the fluctuation of the naira.

According to Muhammadu Gwadangwaji, the Chairman of the food vendors association at Bayan Kara Market, some shops and warehouses belonging to traders were set ablaze by youths during the unrest. Despite the efforts of security agents who fired gunshots and teargas into the air, the looters persisted in their actions.

Reacting to the incident, Ahmed Idris, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, expressed dismay, labeling the event as “unfortunate.” He clarified that the looted food items were part of supplies procured by the state government for distribution to the people. He estimated the value of distributed grains to exceed N5 billion, emphasizing that the stolen goods belonged to the citizens of Kebbi State.

Idris assured that measures had been taken to secure government warehouses to prevent similar occurrences in the future, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of the state’s residents.
