The dreadful attack unfolded just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the southwestern French city, disrupting the evening rush hour with its brutality.

According to an investigating source cited by Mail Online, a police officer resorted to using machine gun fire to neutralize the assailant on the Left Bank of the Garonne river. This occurred shortly after the knifeman had launched his assault near the city hall.

TV journalist Amaury Bucco provided further details, describing the attacker as a “man dressed in a djellaba and armed with a knife,” situated near the Pont de Pierre (Peter Bridge).

The motive behind the stabbings remains unclear, although the incident transpired on a night marked by heightened tension across France, following ISIS warnings of a potential attack on a football stadium.

Local prosecutors confirmed the fatal outcome, revealing that both the attacker and one of his victims had succumbed to their injuries. Another individual sustained severe stab wounds and was admitted to intensive care.

Eyewitnesses recounted the chilling scene, observing the knifeman assaulting pedestrians with a bladed weapon while chastising them for drinking.

Prosecutors later disclosed that the deceased victim, fatally stabbed in the throat, was a 36-year-old Algerian national. The attack occurred in Place de la Bourse (Stock Exchange Square), where the assailant targeted multiple individuals.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the assailant confronted a group of North African individuals, reprimanding them for consuming alcohol during Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting. However, authorities have yet to ascertain the exact motive behind the attack.

Although initial reports indicated no terrorist connections, authorities continue to probe the incident to determine the precise circumstances and motive behind the deadly assault.
