Labour Party Fixes New Dates For Presidential, Gov & Reps Primaries

According to Ireporter Online, the Labour Party has announced a rescheduling of its primary elections originally slated for May 27 and May 29, 2026.

In a new timetable, the party disclosed that all its primaries—including those for President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly—will now be conducted simultaneously on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

The governorship and State Houses of Assembly primaries were initially scheduled for May 27, while the presidential and National Assembly primaries were fixed for May 29 before the adjustment.

The party explained that the decision became necessary due to the clash of the earlier dates with significant national events. It noted that May 27 coincides with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration, while May 29 marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across the country.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ken Eluma Asogwa, stated that the adjustment was made out of consideration for the importance of both occasions, stressing that the party remains committed to inclusiveness and respect for national and religious observances.

He added that the Labour Party regretted any inconvenience the change might cause aspirants, stakeholders, and members of the public, while urging all concerned to take note of the new date and make necessary arrangements.

The rescheduled primaries are expected to produce the party’s candidates for the 2027 general elections across all major elective positions.
