Labour Unions Demand Action: NLC, TUC Call For Suspension Of NAFDAC DG Over Sachet Alcohol Ban

Accusing Adeyeye of colluding with multinational corporations to stifle local businesses, the unions have intensified their protests against what they deem an “anti-people policy.”

Leading a massive demonstration in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, union leaders Akeem Lasisi and Hammed Ademola Benco voiced their outrage, denouncing the ban as detrimental to Nigeria’s economy and workforce.

With members of various labour unions joining the protest, the streets echoed with chants and slogans condemning the ban and its perceived consequences. Protesters brandished placards bearing messages such as “Sachet alcohol is not Nigeria’s problem” and “Don’t create another problem, don’t make us jobless in this biting economy,” amplifying their demands for a reversal of the policy.

The ban, imposed by NAFDAC, has sparked nationwide dissent, with factory shutdowns and widespread outcry from both industry stakeholders and labour groups. Lasisi, addressing the Ogun State House of Assembly, warned of dire repercussions, including massive job losses and significant economic setbacks.

“We believe this policy is anti-people,” declared Lasisi. “The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, should be suspended for colluding with multinational companies to destroy indigenous industries. We will not accept this. Adeyeye must go.”

Meanwhile, the NLC Chairman called upon State Houses of Assembly to intervene and persuade NAFDAC to reconsider its stance, emphasizing the urgency of protecting the manufacturing sector from further harm.

In response to the demonstrators, the Speaker of the Assembly pledged to advocate for the protesters’ interests, promising to engage with the federal government to address their grievances.

Amid escalating tensions, the labour unions remain steadfast in their demand for justice, vowing to continue their fight until the ban is lifted and the interests of Nigerian workers are safeguarded.
